I have made these turkey burgers many times, but none have been as eventful as tonight’s preparation. I was looking forward to these burgers because they are healthy (even more so without the bun) and quick to make; as I was gathering all my ingredients I realized that I finished the last of my eggs this morning…. of course I had nothing else thawed to cook, so off to the grocery store I went. After grabbing my eggs and 15 other things I probably didn’t need, I was ready to start prepping my burgers. Before I started making the meat mixture, I went out and turned on the grill. The igniter on our grill doesn’t work anymore, therefore I have to stick a torch lighter in between the grates to start it every time. Mind you, I grill several nights a week and have never had an issue with this method of grill igniting. Well this time as I was clicking the lighter to spark a flame, WOOOSH! I had accidentally turned on all of the burners at once and the flame that came out of that grill was the biggest I’ve ever seen!!! I Instantly felt a burning sting sensation on my hand and immediately after I felt my face to make sure my eye browns were still there….they were, but boy was that scary. I burnt my hand pretty good and burnt all the hair off my right arm, which by the way is the worst smelling thing you could imagine. Its a cross between extremely burnt chicken and dying flesh {lol}, not pleasant. In any case, I am fine, but nothing I do can just be normal, I am the biggest klutz and Murphy’s Law totally applies to my life. Hopefully you have better luck lighting the grill for these tasty burgers.
Ingredients:
1lb ground turkey (I used Colman humanely raised lean turkey breast found at Shoprite)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon meat tenderizer
1 teaspoon adobo
1 teaspoon parsley (dry or chopped fresh)
Pinch of salt
Cracked pepper to taste
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (not enough to be spicy, just for flavor)
1/4 cup unseasoned bread crumbs
1/2 fresh avacado
Sriracha sauce
4 slices of your favorite cheese (I used a sliced pepper jack cheese)
4 hamburger buns if desired
Instructions:
Serving size = 4 burgers
Start the grill to get it preheated to medium heat. In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, egg, garlic powder, meat tenderizer, adobo, parsley, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper, mix well. Form burgers to about palm size and 1 1/2 inches thick, keep in mind they will shrink a bit when cooked. Lightly coat grill grates with vegetable cooking spray and add burgers to the grill. Cook on each side about 5-7 minutes, turning only once. With about a minute left, top each burger with your favorite cheese and allow to melt. Top with fresh sliced avocado and sriracha sauce.
Enjoy!
